Even if you're on the right track, you'll get run over if you just sit there.

Communication:
E-mail is the BEST way to get in touch with me. Please give me a 48-hour window for a response. I will not answer my phone during a lesson, but if you leave a voicemail, I will try to get back with you by the end of the day.

Grading Policy:
Meigs will continue with the current grading policy where homework counts for 10%, summative assessments count for 90%, and students will have the opportunity to retake any summative assessment.
Homework Policy:
Homework will be assigned frequently to help students practice skills we have learned in class that day. It should be completed individually at home. Parents are encouraged to review their child’s homework. If your student has major problems that you cannot seem to assist them with, students can call Homework, contact a friend for clarification, or see Miss Holloway the next morning.
After the required “Bellringer” at the beginning of class, I will check to see that students have completed their homework assignment. We will go over answers as a class and grade the homework. Please note: this will count for 10% of a student’s nine-weeks average; it may sometimes be graded for completion and sometimes for accuracy. There will be no retakes for homework. Grades will be communicated through Campus so all stakeholders can be aware of the student’s level of participation. For completion grades, you will either see a “4” or “0” indicating whether your student completed their homework or not. Completion of homework will factor into student eligibility for reward days. Students who have completed 75% or more of their homework for a nine-weeks period in all of their classes (and received no referrals) will be eligible for reward days.
Students will have time in class to ask questions about the homework, correct their answers, and clarify any difficulties they may have had while completing the assignment. This process is important because students will take regular summative assessments over the material covered in class. Therefore, on nights before assessments, students should use their corrected homework to prepare. Those who choose not to complete homework take a risk in performing low on their summative assessments.
Homework will be left in the math book as much as possible in an effort to keep students’ notes and practice together.
Late Work:
I will hold students accountable for completing work in a timely manner. This will be most strongly reflected in a student’s homework scores. I do not rescore late homework since we always go over the answers in class the next day. Students should always go back and complete their incomplete homework to prepare for assessments, but I will not change homework grades. If a student does not have their homework on time, you will see a “0”. Even if a student finishes their homework later, the zero will remain. This will help parents and students see the percentage of homework completed to determine reward day eligibility.
Absent Work:
Students are responsible for obtaining and completing any assignments given while they are absent from class. Assignments are posted daily on the class website and also on the “This Week” board in the classroom. Students should get the phone number of a reliable friend who can let them know what they missed.
Personal Learning Time (PLT)
Students have a Personal Learning Time scheduled each morning after first block. PLT will be used to meet the needs of our students in a number of ways: tutoring, retakes, lessons with the school counselor, visits to the library, work periods, or class meetings. On Fridays, all seventh graders Drop Everything And Read (DEAR).
Lunch-Time Tutoring:
Lunch-time tutoring is something Miss Holloway offers on Tuesdays and Thursdays for students who might need a little extra help or time understanding or working on an assignment. Students eat in my room and receive the help they need. In order to attend, students need to sign up in my classroom before lunch. Bringing a lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays is recommended for students who wish to attend tutoring.
Tardies:
Students are expected to arrive to class on time. If tardiness is frequent, parents will be notified first. If the problem continues, students will be referred to the office for further consequences per the school’s policy.
Campus:
Campus will be updated about once a week, usually towards the end of the weekend. Pay careful attention to the “Notes” for I often leave messages about retakes or other information regarding the assignment. If you see a grade you do not understand or do not like, please ask your student first. More than likely, they will be able to explain the grade. If there are further questions, please contact Miss Holloway.
Supplies Policy:
Students are expected to come prepared to class each day. Some materials are MANDATORY every day. A student cannot be successful in class without a pencil, pen, paper, math book, and agenda.
The Paperback Math Book: This year we will continue to use a textbook where students are able to write directly in their book. It is like a math book and workbook combined! Students are asked not to tear anything out of the book in an effort to help them keep up with their work. The book is two volumes, but students have only received the first volume at this time. They will receive the second volume when we move to the concepts covered in that book. The book is where students will take notes, complete classwork, complete homework, and prepare for assessments.
There will be other handouts and worksheets that students will need to keep that do not come from the math book. Students can establish their own system for keeping up with extra instructional materials. Some suggestions were an accordion folder, a three-prong folder, a section in a binder, or a smaller separate binder for math.
On Mondays students fill out their agendas for the entire week. It is very difficult to keep up with everything for every class without an agenda. Agendas will be sold at Meigs for $6 or students can purchase their own.
Must Have Supplies:
· Loose leaf paper
· Graph paper
· Pencils (Mechanical pencils are encouraged because they cut down on sharpening time at the beginning of class!J)
· Pen
· Any kind of 4-function calculator (NOT NEEDED UNTIL SECOND SEMESTER)
· Agenda
· Consider having markers, crayons, other art supplies, a ruler, and a protractor at home.
Items that are not required, but are greatly appreciated:
· Tissues
· Disinfecting wipes (Lysol and such)
· Extra pencils
· Extra graph paper
· Skinny and regular EXPO markers
· Chart sized graph paper
· Large chart paper
Calculator Policy
Although they will be required to do most arithmetic by hand, students should have access their own calculator for some lessons and to check their work at home. Students DO NOT have to invest in an expensive graphing calculator since Miss Holloway has a class set of calculators in the classroom. When purchasing a calculator, please consider that it is beneficial to have calculators that compute square and cube roots, work well with exponents, and express decimals in fraction form. Most office supply stores have these for under $20. Recommended calculators are TI-30XS and TI-34 (or comparable ones made by a brand other than Texas Instruments).
Personal Electronics Policy
We live in a technological world and many students own personal computers, tablets, phones, and e-readers. Because of this, technology is intentionally integrated into our math class frequently. If we do plan on using laptops in a lesson, students are welcome to bring their own. Please understand though that in math class, students should not plan on using computers or tablets for note taking or as calculators. Students are expected to take notes by hand to show all of their work. However, students may always bring e-readers to class and use them if they finish their work early. If students choose to use their technological device for anything non-academic (apps, games, social media), the device will be confiscated until the end of the school day and parents will be contacted.
